Erosion Control Using Vetiver Grass

With very thin top soil layer, the tropics are prone to big soil erosion problem when the vegetation in the form of trees, shrubs and grasses are taken off.

On our site in Malaysia we have few terraces that have been mismanaged and erosion was causing the soil to be deposited in the ponds and lakes below off them

One year ago we started planting vetiver grass on contour as an erosion control , now the grass is well established and holding the soil in place which means less top soil being lost down towards water ways and ponds.

Vetiver grass grown as a narrow hedgerow across the slope of the land will slow down rainfall runoff velocity and will filter out soil particles.

Grown from cuttings, vetiver cuttings were placed on contour 6 inches apart on three layers between each terrace. This plant grows really fast in the tropics and results were evident within less than 6 months.
