Our chickens on the farm live in what we call a chicken tractor. Its designed to fit 50 fully grown chooks, has a ladder for them to roost on and well sheltered corners for them to lay eggs when they reach maturity. Its a copy of what we used with my teacher Geoff Lawton in Zaytuna Farm, to move chickens in different systems preparing ground for vegetable gardens, food forest establishment or following cows in grazing fields.
Here in Malaysia we move our chickens between orchards to control grass growth and break the cycle of pests at the same time fertilize the ground and produce delicious eggs and meat.
We just moved half of the flock to a new tractor, fenced by electric netting, these two tractors are now free ranging under a starfruit orchard.
